Best river beaches near Rio Caldo: Alqueirão, México and Barca

The Caniçada Reservoir, in the heart of Gerês, has several river beaches just minutes from Rio Caldo — and one of them is right on Casa Miralago's doorstep. This guide focuses on Alqueirão Beach, awarded Gold Quality status, but also covers México Beach and Barca Beach, for anyone who wants to explore more than one swimming spot during their stay.

Alqueirão Beach — the Gold Beach, 15 minutes on foot

Gold Quality — Quercus

Alqueirão Beach sits on the shore of the Caniçada Reservoir, in Vilar da Veiga, just after the bridge connecting Rio Caldo to Vila do Gerês — the same area where Casa Miralago is located. It’s no coincidence we recommend it first: it’s the river beach our guests can reach on foot, without needing a car.

This beach has been awarded the Gold Quality distinction in consecutive years by Quercus – the National Association for Nature Conservation. The criteria are demanding: excellent water quality over the last four bathing seasons, all tests above the legal reference values, and no advisories, bans or temporary closures of the beach during that period.

Beyond the water quality, what makes this spot special is the view: mountains and valleys all around, the Rio Caldo Marina, and the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta on the opposite shore. It’s also a popular starting point for anyone wanting to try water sports on the reservoir.

México Beach — the quiet one

On the other side of the reservoir, in the municipality of Vieira do Minho, México Beach is the quietest of the three. It’s located in the parish of Cova, near Santo Amaro and Faldrem, and getting there requires a short walk — which naturally keeps away the crowds that fill other Gerês beaches on hot days.

It has a large, clean sandy area, good water quality, and a support café-bar (“Praia do México”) with a terrace facing the water, ideal for a cool drink after a swim. There’s also natural shade scattered across the sand.

Barca Beach — for family water sports

Located in the parish of Rio Caldo, near the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta, Barca Beach is known for its warm water (around 25°C) and for being the go-to spot for renting water equipment in the region. The company GTA – Gerês Turismo Aventura operates right there, with pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards available every day from 10 AM to 8 PM.

It’s one of the most popular beaches in the area, so it fills up quickly on summer weekends — it’s worth arriving early, especially if you’re counting on the free parking next to the beach.

Before you go: practical tips

  • None of these three beaches has a lifeguard — take extra care with children and the reservoir's uneven depth.
  • On summer weekends, arrive early — especially at Barca Beach, where the free parking fills up first.
  • If you stay at Casa Miralago, you'll have a SUP board included and a river access point 100 m away — you don't even need to leave the house to get in the water.
  • México Beach is the only one that requires a final stretch on a dirt track — wear appropriate footwear.
