Easy family trails in Peneda-Gerês

Gerês · Terras de Bouro ·2 min read ·

You don't need to be an experienced hiker to see the best of Peneda-Gerês. These five trails were chosen for being short, well signposted and safe to walk with kids — most are less than 25 minutes by car from Casa Miralago.

Arado Waterfall

  • Easy
  • 30-60 min

This is probably the most popular trail in the region, and for good reason: you can drive right up to the bridge over the Arado River along a dirt track, and from there it’s just a short climb up stone steps to the viewpoint over the waterfall. Easy, surrounded by nature, with breathtaking views — ideal for families, couples, or anyone with just an afternoon to spare.

Location
About 8 km from Vila do Gerês, following the road and then a dirt track to the bridge over the Arado River.
Distance / duration
Short route, about 30-60 minutes round trip from the car park by the bridge.
From Casa Miralago
About 20-25 minutes by car, via Vila do Gerês.

Fecha de Barjas Waterfalls (“Tahiti”)

  • Easy, with caution

Also on the Arado River, but quite a bit further downstream — it’s not right next to the Arado Waterfall, expect some distance between the two — this is a series of small waterfalls and pools along the river’s right bank. The first pools, within the first 100 metres, are shallow and safe for those walking with kids. The deeper, more popular swimming pools — known as “Tahiti” — are further along and aren’t recommended for groups with young children.

With kids
Stick to the first pools, which are shallower and easier to reach — don't continue to the "Tahiti" pools with young children.
Caution
The rocks by the water get very slippery. Footwear with good grip is essential.

Trilho da Preguiça (PR10)

  • Moderate/Easy
  • 4-5.5 km

A circular trail that starts near the Preguiça Forest Ranger House, on the road between Vila do Gerês and Portela do Homem. It passes the Preguiça Viewpoint, the Leonte Waterfall and the Laja Waterfall, always accompanied by the sound of streams. There’s a longer version (5.5 km, about 3 hours) and shorter versions — for families with younger children, it’s worth choosing the shorter route to the Leonte Waterfall.

Starting point
Preguiça Forest Ranger House, on the N308-1 (Vila do Gerês → Portela do Homem).
Distance
4 km on the short version, up to 5.5 km on the full circular route (~3h).
From Casa Miralago
About 20-25 minutes by car to Vila do Gerês, plus a few more minutes along the N308-1.

Pedra Bela Viewpoint

  • Very easy

If you’re looking for the shortest trail of all — almost no walking required — the Pedra Bela Viewpoint is the answer: you can drive to within a few metres of it, and the rest is a wooden platform over the rocks, with views over the whole Caniçada Reservoir. We’ve already dedicated a full article to it, with more details on the dam you can see from up there.

Tips for hiking with kids in Gerês

  • Always bring closed shoes with good grip — the rocks near the waterfalls get slippery even on easy trails.
  • Bring extra water, especially in summer — most of these trails have little shade on the final stretches.
  • Start early: the car parks near Arado and Vila do Gerês fill up by mid-morning on sunny days.
  • None of these swimming spots has a lifeguard — keep kids in sight, especially near the deeper pools.
